Dear Readers,
I watched this film some time ago and shortly after one of it’s stars, Irrfan Khan, died suddenly and I have been mourning ever since. You may recognize him from the film, “Slumdog Millionaire” but every role he has played is sheer gold.
I want you all to watch this film either on youtube.com or Neflix.com and the story about a poor barber is a small village in India. Of course, as being a hairdresser my whole adult life I understood so much of this man’s livelihood and hardship. It’s a tough life pleasing people and he is a very good and kind man, Billu the Barber, the Irrfan character. But then a India superstar comes to town with a film crew to film a movie and the whole town is delighted with this news. But the story just begins there as the story is Billu knows this film star as they were childhood friends.
I watched this film again yesterday with my dear friend and Pulpwood Queen Barbara Deen. We both were lost in the story. I cried as hard as I did the first time and my eyes mist up just recalling the film.
You all it’s all about the story, whether is the song, the dance, the film, the screenplay, or the book. As The Pulpwood Queens and Timber Guys Book Club moves forward into our reads for 2021, I will be selecting a book set in this country, a book set out of the country and films to go along with each book to give us a better understanding and more global awareness as we armchair travel in the days ahead.
I also have taken the position of the Director of Acquisitions for Lucid House Publishing and will be selecting books from all genres with a focus on diversity and global issues. All my life I have been a reader, now a writer with my first book, my memoir on how books saved me and why I am on a mission to promote authors, books, literacy, and reading, “The Pulpwood Queens’ Tiara Wearing Book Sharing Guide to Life” by Kathy L. Murphy to get the latest updated edition at www.bookshop.org/shop/ThePulpwoodQueensBookShop.
This site also benefits independent bookstores across the country, see my page as I have listed the 2020 Official Pulpwood Queen Book Club lists to order and now adding my 2021 Official Pulpwood Queen Book Club reads as selected. This too is the first book you are to read, hopefully review, and share with all your book loving friends and book club members. I will be happy to Zoom or Facetime to your group about my book.
I am also working now on it’s sequel, “The Pulpwood Queen Goes Back to School”, both literally and figuratively to come out next as my story is far from over or my life’s work to promote authors, books, literacy and reading. Be a lifelong learner, it’s the journey that is important to me.
