Dear Pulpwood Queens and Timber Guys Book Club Members and Book Lovers Everywhere!
Being a grown-up is hard, in fact, sometimes it is practically no fun at all. You have a job, you go to work and you have to work to get the pay to pay for all the every mounting bill. There is no recess in adult life unless you save and save them maybe you can get a weekend off to do something that perhaps is fun!
Welcome to Pulpwood Queen Girlfriend Weekend!
When I was a child I got lost in books. I loved to use my imagination and play out the scenes that I read. I wrote all about this in my first book, “The Pulpwood Queens’ Tiara Wearing, Book Sharing Guide to Life”. I loved to pretend to be Tarzan up in my treehouse and my imagination would have me swinging from a rope down to romp with my best friend Cheetah, portrayed by my dog Snicklefritz. I have scars on my hand because my non-athletic body betrayed me with the physicality of swinging from branch to branch to ground, thump. Never could climb that rope in gym class but I tried and have the loss of skin scars on my hands to prove it. In my mind, I was lithe, strong, and brave like Tarzan. I never wanted to be Jane as she was a woos, she always had to be rescued from a crocodile or panther or some spear-bearing native. No, I was Tarzan and been collecting animal skins for years, mostly faux as I love animals, to wear to emulate my favorite literary hero.
I wore costumes most of my life, mostly on Halloween where it was accepted by society and social mores. First, I went as Cinderella in Kindergarten but that was my mother’s idea. My favorite Halloween costume was going as Marilyn Monroe complete with bleach blonde wig and pink satin dress or Phyllis Diller with that same wig ratted out from my head, false eyelashes, short mini tent dress with short books and the ever-present cigarette holder with candy cigarette screaming, “Fang! Fang! Oh, where are you, Fang!” Phyllis Diller was a very famous comedian from my day that I loved and played a mean concert piano! You get the picture.
So when my annual Pulpwood Queen Girlfriend Weekend started to evolve from a one-day affair to a full-blown weekend, I knew we had to have costumes. Author, Musical artist, the late great Kathi Kamen Goldmark helped me start The Great Big Ball of Hair Ball. We would dress up with really Big Hair because, girlfriends, nothing is funnier than having really BIG HAIR!
BIG HAIR always takes you best to any truly important event!
I did this bride on time in my hair salon/book store and all her bridesmaids and her wanted really Big, Big Hair! I have never seen girls laugh and cry so much as they sipped Margaritas in the shop and Mama looking on with delight. She picked up the whole tab. I decided right then and there we would all have to have really BIG HAIR! I remember the bride chocking on laughter was I swept up another barrel curl, “Oh my God, oh my God, I can see air through the curls to the other side.” They kept having to reapply their eyeliner and mascara as it was running from all the tears of laughter. I wanted to embody that spirit into my Girlfriend Weekend so we did!
You will see the many faces and sides of my twisted and quirky personality and really the true me as I plan my dress up clothes for this year’s Girlfriend Weekend which theme is BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY! As show me a person who does not have fun singing that QUEEN song and I’ll show you the biggest fuddy-duddy! I have printed off the lyrics so we can have a mass singing at out event that I will be Facetiming LIVE from Girlfriend Weekend!
I did a paper on the contemporary artist, Cindy Sherman, a while back my senior semester of college at The University of Texas at Tyler. I found out that Cindy too like to play dress up as a kid and since she was a photographer she would take photos of her playing dress up as these characters. Oh, my heart be still, there are others like me. But she chose even as a child to play the monster, me too, Cindy me too. We use to play monster in the back yard with the Surber girls. I would be the monster as I was the biggest and all my sisters, the neighborhood girls would dress up in our mother’s old formals and run, run, run, from me as the monster. It was truly loads of fun and I can still feel my adrenaline running from that playtime adventure. Too much, probably but it’s all about having some BIG TIME FUN!
Life is just too short to not have some fun. I have lost some pretty important people in my life the last few years, my friend Jane Ryder who I adored, Pam Pohl, one of my Pulpwood Queens that I use to teach swimming lessons out at the Eureka Country Club, Harper Lee, be still my heart, Pat Conroy, my hero and favorite author of all time, and my Great Santini, my father plus dozens of others that left much too soon. So this is my life and I am living it to it’s fullest. Won’t you join me? Come play dress up at my annual Pulpwood Queen Girlfriend Weekend where we get to hear nearly 50 authors talk about their books. This is the party I plan that I most want to go to and we get to play dress up from the Authors dressing as HIPPIES as they wait the tables for the Author Dinner on Friday. To creating their own Bohemian TIARAS for the TIARA contest and bonus points for dressing Behomenian with a Pulpwood Queen twist, out signature animal print and Hot Pink wardrobe! Then the Grand Finale, dressing Bohemian for the ball. Cinderella again has her day and this time she’s wearing these darling little-embroidered shoes that I bought at a second-hand store in Nacogdoches with toes that curl up on the end! I’m not losing one of them either because I don’t need a prince to rescue me because The Pulpwood Queen in her heart lives on as TARZAN, King or perhaps QUEEN of the jungle!
Authors, Ad Hudler and Jamie Ford with my Pulpwood Queens of Southwest Louisiana the bikini babes!
Enjoy the pics and see you January 11 – 14, 2018 at The Fredon Hotel & Convention Center in historic Nacogdoches, Texas where the city literally rolls out the hot pink carpet for us! We are Back in NAC!
