Dear Pulpwood Queens and Timber Guys Book Club Members, our Authors, all Book Lovers and those planning on attending our Annual book club convention that we call GIRLFRIEND WEEKEND!
Let’s talk about Girlfriend Weekend. What is it? For one weekend a year, always Martin Luther King Weekend as I too have a big dream, I invite in first all the authors of the books we have read, or are reading, or will be reading for 2018. You see I created this book club so I could discuss books, the books that I read to enlighten, entertain, and hopefully give us a better perspective on some aspect of life that we had not known before. The books have to be well written and give voice to that perspective. We are an international book club so I like to select books from all over the world. I like to feature both men and women authors in all genres. I also love to help the first time, first book authors or authors that may be undiscovered for whatever reason. Because our book clubs actually meet and discuss the books in person, though some follow along online, I truly try to help make that full book author connection, so thus this weekend.
Second, I played by all the rules for most of my life and it got me nowhere. In fact, the local book club invited me to join their book club years ago to only invite me to one meeting. What is up with that? Evidently, unless somebody died or moved away, I could not be in their book club as only eight would be comfortable to fit around their table. I still do not understand as when they invited me to come, that made nine. So that is why as I drove home so disappointed to not truly to be invited, I decided to start my own book club, The Pulpwood Queens, where tiaras are mandatory and the ONLY rule is you have to read the book that I select. Oh, it’s mostly all in my book except the part where I was not allowed to join that hometown book club. Too uncomfortable for me to mention that in my book, “The Pulpwood Queens’ Tiara Wearing, Book Sharing Guide to Life’ at the time as I lived there. But you all I moved and moved on to the more important things in life, being with people who are inclusive, not exclusive. No worst feeling in the world than being blackballed by anything.
So I started my book club, then men wanted to join, so being an inclusive book club we let them. I can still count them on both my hands, hahahahaa, so that is why we call our book club convention Girlfriend Weekend as it is mostly girlfriends, where we laugh and talk and listen to our favorite authors. We hang out with them and they wait our tables at our author dinner, it is dee-vine. It is the party I most want to go to because it is BIG TIME FUN! We dress up, hang out, party altogether and then we host a Great Big Ball of Hair Ball where we dance until they run us out of the venue. Students with 80-year-old women and it’s of life-affirming that I live off of all the recharge it gives my batteries for a full year.
So we are now offering packages but also Day panel tickets, Night time event tickets to our Author Dinner and Great Big Ball of Hair Ball! Did I mention we play dress up? Our signature look is Hot Pink and Leopard print anything. I have this year a wardrobe that would rival CHER’S but with a lot more material as we keep it clean. Our authors have brought their children and attendees too then after our Big Hair Ball we all put on our SUNDAY CROWNS, our hats, and we go to the First United Methodist Church for Worship. Now I am Christian but I have had those attend who are Jewish, Catholic, Lutherns, Church of God, Church of Christ, Agnostics, Buddhist, and non-believers. Why? Because to me it’s all about being together no matter your faith or beliefs, it’s about accepting our differences and reflecting on what a wonderful world this truly is.
You are crazy Kat, people say. Yes, I may be but my hope and dreams are that in our life there will be joy, understanding, and peace. Reading and educating ourselves is the key to a life that has purpose and meaning. I am not politically correct, in fact, I hate politics as to me it brings out the worst in people. I grew up in the seventies when drinking a Coke, I sang, “I would like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony. I am a dreamer, a believer in the good in people no matter where they come from because folks, we are were created equal. We all have the same basic wants and needs. Look to our similarities, not to our differences. My how boring would life be if we were truly all exactly the same.
So won’t you join me, throw caution to the wind and come experience something that truly gives you a connection to something that is more important than all the things we think we have to have in life. What we really need are those connections to people that make us want to laugh and sing. Our authors have the most amazing stories, I could listen to them all day and in fact, that would be heaven to me on earth, to just listen to authors tell us their stories. You see they are the master storytellers and that is the best entertainment in the world. Enough, you get the picture. Come.
Next I want to share some special people, take two of my vendors that travel year after year to Girlfriend Weekend with their incredibly beautiful jewelry, fashion, and the best slippers in the world. Leitha Herring and her mother Dell Kirkman. Here is what they bring to the Pulpwood Queen Big Picture! I just love them!
Mother/daughter Dell Kirkman and Leitha Herring, designers of one of a kind jewelry pieces incorporating semi-precious stones, bone, horn, wood, shell…anything of natural beauty. Black pieces are African glass, carved horn, and bone with inlay. The second is a mix of Jasper, turquoise, horn.
We have many more vendors hand selected by me to bring you some of the best art to go along with all our fantabulous books.
So hope to see you at the big ta do. Here also is our absolutely final program below, individual tickets for the day and night events are up on our website, www.thepulpwoodqueens.com, as well as complete packages. Kathy L. Murphy
