Dear Pulpwood Queens and Timber Guy Book Club Members and the Arts Lovers Everywhere!
Do you believe in magic? I do. I believe in magic, in fairy tales, in happy endings, and in authors, books, literacy, reading, and the arts. Some perhaps find fault in my belief that we must never lose the magic of the wonder of a child. I sometimes feel that I go back and forth between being Peter Pan to Tinkerbell to Wendy and even to the Lost Boys but I have created my own magical world in which I want to live in. And in that world is the biggest event of my year, my annual Pulpwood Queen Book Club convention that we call our Girlfriend Weekend 2018. When you believe in something so much you work as hard as you can to bring it to perfection. This year I nailed it. I have some the best authors in the country who are so excited to come but for some strange reason to me, others do not feel the magic.
Alice Hoffman posted this image today below:
I love fairy tales, my whole life has been inspired by those classic tales of my childhood. My art is all about those fairy tales, you see everything I do in life has been because of my love of reading those stories. As a child, I looked to escape from a world that was much too frightening to me and it was to the treehouse with a book that I found my escape. As an adult, it is now my Official Pulpwood Queen book club selections like Alice Hoffman’s that through my ever growing imagination I escape into the magic!
For years I have been trying to get her to agree to come to Girlfriend Weekend and I finally DID IT! I love everything she writes but to have her come for “The Rules of Magic” the prequel to “Practical Magic” just thrilled me beyond words. Thanks to Carolyn Turgeon, my author friend, and editor of FAERIE Magazine which I adore, the magic happened. We are also so very fortunate to be able to give out to each attendee a copy of this incredibly beautiful and to me keepsake magazine for all to treasure and pore over when they get home, it’s a visual feast. Alice Hoffman is a contributing writer, as well as, other authors I adore. Carolyn too will be speaking of her latest endeavor, “The Faerie Handbook” which is an utter delight for us fairy tale lovers.
So today is the last day to sign up for another magical adventure, Judy Wilder Dalton’s Alcohol Ink class who you may have seen was my major medium focus in my Senior Exhibition during my final semester at The University of Texas in Tyler. I adore this medium and would never have ever discovered it if I had not taken a beginning class from Judy. It’s magic! She is an incredible teacher and we only have three signed up. The class may be canceled and I am so sad. The hours of joy that I have had from working in this medium are countless. Please sign up today to make this class fly and the magic for YOU happen at https://judywilderdalton.com/…/alcohol-ink-workshop-at-girl…or you can message her on her Judy Wilder Dalton Facebook page.
So this post, what do I ask do you believe in magic? Because my friends I have created an event that I am very proud of and now it is time to ask, do you believe in the magic too? We have a good attendance this year but in order to keep this event going we have to tend, grow, and nuture our incredible garden of literary delights, like our book clubs. This kind of program truly demands a royal turnout. I have planted the seeds, but I need help in tending our beautiful bounty of authors.
My plea, bring one friend. Authors, attendees, spread the news. We now have day passes per your request, please share this news. But perhaps it is time to go back to our humble beginnings. I put up a tent in my yard. We weathered the elements but we had a ton of fun. Or perhaps it is like Pat Conroy once told me, “I thought the book world was over.” But Pat came to my Girlfriend Weekend, helped me start the Author Dinner where all the authors waited the tables for the book club attendees. I swear, the look on their faces when Pat asked, “Would you like sweet tea?” It was priceless. He called and invited himself back the next year as he loved what he experienced. I do not think anyone of us there will ever forget his author talk. All the authors love Girlfriend Weekend but again I have to ask, “Do you believe in the magic?”
So get one more person to register for Girlfriend Weekend and this event will not only continue but fly but reach for the stars! What would your world be like without the magic? Do you truly believe?
Truly,
Kathy L. Murphy
