Postcards from Lonnie: How I Rediscovered My Brother on the Street Corner He Called Home
Postcards from Lonnie is a memoir about my relationship with my brother, Lonnie, who was homeless most of his adult life. It is a dialogue between Lonnie — through 94 postcards, in his handwriting, with smudges, creases and all — and me, his little sister. I wrote a question for him on each card and addressed them to myself, then sent them to him in packets, using the address of a flower shop near “Lonnie’s corner.” He wrote his answers and tossed the cards in a mailbox. The questions ranged from “Where do you sleep” and “How do you get money when you need it,” to “If you had $1,000, what would you spend it on” and “Where do you see yourself in 10 years.” His answers are honest, insightful, sometimes funny, and always thoughtful. My side of the dialogue is part commentary, part reflection, and part discovery, as I came to realize that Lonnie’s story was my story, too. Postcards from Lonnie is a unique portrait, and ultimately a story about unconditional love.
